Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling, WV - Assistant Coach Doug Doull made his head coaching debut as Greg Puhalski was at home tending to family matters but the Wheeling Nailers fell to the Cincinnati Cyclones 6-3 on Halloween at WesBanco Arena in front of several costumed ghosts, princesses and other characters.

Matt Pierce led the way for Cincinnati with a hat trick. Bryan Marshall added a couple of tallies for the winners.

Wheeling had goals on the night from Pierce Norton (2), Andrew Lord (2) and Ryan Schnell (2).

Cincinnati improves to 3-0 against Wheeling on the season and the Nailers continue to hunt for their first win on home-ice.

Matt Pierce scored a power play goal from the right wing and slid it past Parise's right skate giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead in the 1st.

Pierce opened the 2nd with another goal making it 2-0 as he was able to poke the puck over the goal line on a 5 on 3 power play.

That sparked a wild back-and-forth stretch in the opening 5 minutes of the 2nd period that saw both teams score a pair of goals.

Pierce Norton scored on a rebound off a Blair Yaworski shot at 3:49 getting the Nailers on the board at 2-1. Norton scored in his pro debut Sunday against Elmira and the Providence College product picked up his second goal of the season in just his 3rd pro game.

Cincinnati responded just 10 seconds after the ensuing center face-off with Bryan Marshall beating Parise up the left-wing.

Less than 30 seconds after that Andrew Lord would get it right back as he would fight his way through the defense and get the shot off as he was being knocked down beating Robert Mayer low for his 2nd goal of the season. Lord is a West Vancouver, BC native who was the 3rd on the Nailers in scoring last year and is their top returning scorer.

After the smoke cleared in the crazy exchange of 4 goals in 4 minutes and 3 goals in less than one minute the Cyclones held a 4-3 lead.

Bryan Marshall lit the lamp for his 2nd goal of the night at 9:32 extending Cincinnati's lead to 4-2.

Ryan Schnell got it back for the Nailers 3 minutes later to close the gap to 4-3 as he fired it home up the left-wing converting on a 2-on-1 rush. Schnell had Couturier racing up the middle but Schnell shot it himself catching Mayer off-balance for the goal. Schnell is a rookie from Cary, IL who played last year with Saginaw of the OHL

Wheeling killed off a Cincinnati power play to begin the 3rd period and stay within a goal but seconds after the power play expired Mike McLean was able to stuff it in behind Parise.

Matt Pierce finished the scoring and wrapped up his hat trick with a breakaway goal at 14:04 for the final score.

The power plays made the difference on the night as Cincinnati went 3-for-6 while Wheeling was 0-for-4. Shots on goal was 30-23 in favor of the Cyclones. Jordan Parise took the loss for the Nailers while Robert Mayer got his first pro win for Cincinnati.

The homestand continues for the Nailers the following weekend with Wheeling hosting South Carolina and Johnstown on Friday, November 6 and Saturday November 7. Friday is Family 4-Pack night and Saturday is Team Poster giveaway for the first 2500 fans and Team Autograph night in the WesBanco Club after the game. Call the Nailers for tickets at 304-234-GOAL (4625).
