Alaska Suffers 3rd Straight Setback

October 31, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Mark Derlago scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and assisted on the eventual game-winner as Idaho remained unbeaten with a 5-3 victory over Alaska in front of 4,835 Friday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces have dropped three consecutive games since matching a club record with a 4-0 start. The Steelheads joined Kalamazoo and Elmira as ECHL teams that have run off six straight wins to begin the 2009-10 campaign. The rematch will be held tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m., with the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 5:05 p.m., followed by a postgame "Skate with the Aces," presented by Fred Meyer. Both games will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM.

Mathieu Tousignant gave Idaho a 1-0 lead at 8:18 of the first period on a wrist shot that slipped past Alaska starter Sebastian Dahm. Marty Flichel followed with a power play goal five minutes later, a one-timer from the right circle that again beat Dahm's blocker. Matt Stefanishion answered with a power play goal for the Aces, his fourth of the season, set up by Colin Hemingway off the rush with 2:12 left in the period, bringing Alaska to within 2-1 at the break.

Stefanishion provided a crucial screen in front of Idaho goalie Richard Bachman that led to the equalizer late in the second period on another power play. Tyson Marsh's blast from the point deflected off a Steelhead defenseman and trickled home at 17:24. But an Aces turnover led to Derlago's tie-breaking goal just two minutes into the third period, a wrist shot that beat Dahm high glove. Derlago set up Weston Hardy's goal off the rush that turned out to be a key insurance goal with 4:51 left in regulation.

Eric Boguniecki, an NHL veteran of 178 games appearing in the ECHL for the first time in 13 years, scored on a rebound with 1:18 remaining and the extra attacker on for Dahm to reduce the deficit to 4-3. But after a flurry in front of Bachman, Idaho managed to clear the puck ahead to Flichel, who fed Ashton Rome for an empty-netter with 13.7 seconds left. The Steelheads out-shot the Aces 33-23. Only five of Alaska's 23 goals this season have come in a five-on-five situation.
