Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Friday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Stockton Thunder met in the first of a two-game weekend set at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings started Glenn Fisher in net while the Thunder countered with Andrew Perugini.
The Salmon Kings were the only team to hit the scoreboard in what was an evenly matched first period. At the 12:16 mark after a Thunder turnover behind their own net, Chad Painchaud took a hard feed from Olivier Latendresse across the slot and put the puck past Perugini. Painchaud's tally was his second of the season, and gave the Salmon Kings a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Stockton would take advantage of a power play 8:18 into the middle period and knot the game at 1-1. Off a faceoff and some strong puck-work below the goal-line, forward James Bates was the beneficiary of a crisp pass from Oren Eizenman and fired the puck across Fisher's body and over his blocker into the net. Bates' goal was his second of the season. Stockton's goal was the only one of the frame, and the teams took to the second intermission squared in a 1-1 draw.
At the 13:29 mark of the third period Stockton took a 2-1 lead after Colin Power took a cross-ice feed from Garet Hunt. Power let a shot go that bounced off a Salmon Kings' leg, but bounced right back onto the stick of Power who had Fisher down and out and made no mistake scoring his second goal of the campaign. The Thunder would secure the victory with three late goals in the frame: Judd Blackwater's team-leading fourth goal at 14:56, Jason Pitton's first of the year at 16:47, and a power play marker from James Bates at 19:35 - his second goal of the game. Thunder 5 Salmon Kings 1.
Victoria finished 0/5 0.0% on the power play while Stockton went 2/3 66.7%. The Thunder outshot the Salmon Kings 36-23.
