Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats split their doubleheader with the Lowell Spinners at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Saturday night.

The ValleyCats won the first game in convincing fashion, by a score of 6-3. They then came within one out of winning the second game as well, but ended up losing 2-1 in extra innings.

Game One was highlighted by a six-inning gem from ValleyCats starter Nivaldo Rodriguez. Rodriguez's six innings pitched tied for the most by any ValleyCat this year, while he allowed just one earned run in picking up his second win of the season.

After Enmanuel Valdez scored the ValleyCats' first run on a sacrifice fly from Alex Holderbach in the second inning, Cesar Salazar then brought home two more with a single.

Then leading 3-0, Rodriguez surrendred his only run in the fourth, when Ramfis Berroa came away with an RBI-double.

After the ValleyCats scored another run on a sacrifice fly from Enmanuel Valdez, Jeremy Penacranked his first career home run over the left field wall to open up a 6-1 ValleyCats lead.

RIley Cabral sealed the ValleyCats' win by surrendering two unearned runs in the seventh inning.

The second game of the doubleheader was dominated by pitching.

ValleyCats starter Mark Moclair hurled a career high three innings, while tying his career high with six strikeouts.

He was then replaced by Carlos Hiraldo, who struck out a season-high seven batters and came within one out of earning his third win of the season.

The ValleyCats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, when Michael Wielansky brought Austin Dennis home with the game's first run.

Then with the Spinners down to their final out in the seventh, Dylan Hardy laced a run-scoring single, which tied the game.

Korby Batesole then gave the Spinners their first and only lead of the game with an RBI-single that proved to be the game's decisive run.

The ValleyCats stranded Ramiro Rodriguez on third base as the tying run in the bottom of the eighth, falling to 26-21 on the season.

Entering its series with Connecticut, Tri-City still maintains a 1.5-game lead over Lowell in the Stedler Division standings.

The ValleyCats will return home on August 8, when they throw off a three-game series with their I-87 rival Hudson Valley Renegades on Friday.
