Spikes Fall Victim to Doubledays' Offensive Barrage in 12-5 Defeat

State College Spikes News Release

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The State College Spikes could not overcome the Auburn Doubledays' 21-hit onslaught that included five hits for Carson Shaddy in a 12-5 loss on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Shaddy's five hits were the most for an opponent since Nick Banks, also of the Doubledays (27-20), rapped five hits against the Spikes (19-29) on July 20, 2016, which was also a 21-hit game for Auburn.

Cole Daily added four hits for the Doubledays, with former major leaguer Moises Sierra driving in three runs and collecting three hits in the latest chapter of his rehab assignment in Auburn from Triple-A Syracuse.

In front of a crowd of 5,252 fans, State College took the lead in the third inning when Kevin Woodall, Jr. doubled home a pair of runs and Stanley Espinal followed with an RBI groundout to make it 3-1.

After the Doubledays took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth, Espinal brought the Spikes back within a run in the same frame as he tripled and scored on Lars Nootbaar's groundout.

However, Auburn poured it on with runs in the seventh and eighth, followed by a five-run ninth inning that featured six hits.

Nick Dunn scored the Spikes' last run in the ninth after doubling and crossing the plate on an Auburn error.

The Spikes wore special State "College" Sweater Jerseys for Animal House Night, which went up for bids in a Jersey-off-the-Back Auction presented by PSECU. The auction raised nearly $3,000 for the Children's Miracle Network.

State College's cause was also set back by its season-high four errors.

Spikes starter Chris Holba (2-2) took the loss. Holba was charged with five runs, but only two of them earned, on nine hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings.

Outfielder Walker Robbins, who went 8-2 with a 0.67 ERA as a pitcher in his senior year at George County High School in 2016, recorded the last out on the mound for State College in the ninth inning. Robbins also gave up one hit in his first professional pitching appearance.

Francys Peguero (3-3) started and earned the win for Auburn after yielding three runs on five hits and a hit batsman over five innings. Peguero also notched four strikeouts in the victory.

Sunday, the Spikes hit the road to Ohio to start a three-game series at Eastwood Field against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians). The set begins with a 4:05 p.m. matchup that will feature left-hander Jacob Schlesener (1-3) on the mound for State College against Mahoning Valley right-hander Juan Mota (2-3).

Following the series against the Scrappers, the Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates) from August 8-10.
