
Scrappers Avoid Sweep Thanks To Five Run Seventh Inning

(Batavia, NY)-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers snapped a two game losing streak and avoided being swept by the Batavia Muckdogs with a 7-6 final at Dwyer Stadium on Saturday night. The Scrappers scored five in the seventh and held off a ninth inning rally for their league leading 29th win of the season.
The Scrappers would strike first with a run in the first inning. With two outs, Clark Scolamiero singled to score Mitch Reeves for the lead.
After Batavia tied the score in the bottom of the second inning, the Scrappers would take the lead in the sixth inning. Hosea Nelson led off the inning by blasting his team leading sixth homerun of the season for a 2-1 lead.
The Scrappers would add to the lead in the seventh. Nelson led the charge again with a two run double while Jason Rodriguez added a two run single. The Scrappers would also add a run on an error.
Batavia would rally with a run in the seventh and then scored four in the ninth cutting the lead to one before Erik Algarin struck out Jerar Encarnacion to end the game.
Tyler Freeman singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 17 straight game. He is now tied with former teammate Richie Palacios for the longest streak of the season in the New York Penn League.
Zach Draper (4-3) started and earned the win in 5.0 innings of work. He allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits. Draper walked 1 and struck out 5. Algarin (5) picked up the save after striking out the only batter he faced.
The Scrappers (29-17) now return to Eastwood Field to open a three game series with the State College Spikes. Juan Mota gets the start for the Scrappers. First pitch is set for 4:05.
