Auburn Doubledays News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Washington Nationals 6th round pick in the 2015 Draft, Matt Crownover, a lefty from Clemson, made his debut as Auburn fell to State College 6-2 for its first loss of the season.
Crownover pitched two innings and gave up three hits, two runs (both earned), while walking none, and striking out two. The two runs he gave up came in the second inning when Brian O'Keefe hit a two-run homer down the left field line to give the Spikes a 2-0 lead.
An inning later, State College added two more thanks to back-to-back walks to leadoff the inning, a single by Casey Grayson, and a double by Ronnierd Garcia. Grayson's RBI single ended up being the game winning run.
In the fourth the Spikes added another run to go up 5-0 after Elier Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Danny Martin drove him in with a triple off the wall in right field.
Auburn scored it's first run of the day half an inning later in the top of the fifth when Kelvin Gutierrez scored on the first of two doubles from Bryan Mejia.
In the bottom of the 6th, Martin knocked in Rodriguez on his second triple of the night to give State College a 6-1 lead. With his second triple, Martin became just the sixth player in State College history to hit two triples in one game.
The Doubledays scored their second and final run in the seventh off an RBI single by Conor Keniry that knocked in Mejia from second.
Cody Gunter made his pitching debut after hitting and playing third the last two years in Auburn. He pitched the seventh and the eighth and gave up no runs or hits while walking two and striking out two.
In the ninth inning, Kender Villegas came in to shut the door on the Doubledays, but Auburn started to rally. With two outs, Keniry singled and Matthew Page walked to load the bases. But a batter later, Diomedes Eusebio popped out to first to end the game. It marks the first loss of the season for the Doubledays and the first win of 2015 for the Spikes.
Auburn looks to bounce back tomorrow at 7:05 when it sends Joan Baez to the mound to face Landon Beck.
