Lowell Spinners News Release
FISHKILL, NY - After a weekend in which the Lowell Spinners put up 25 runs and almost tossed a no-hitter, it seemed fitting that they might suffer a letdown as they took on the Hudson Valley Renegades. Not the case. Jose Almonte struck out five over six innings and the Spinners took advantage of some mental errors by the Renegades to score a 6-1 win Monday night at Dutchess Stadium.
The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Hudson Valley (3-1) designated hitter Hector Montes lined a triple into the gap, and scored as the next batter, third baseman Alex Schmidt, grounded out to second base. Â
Lowell (4-0) finally broke through in the seventh as Mitch Gunsolus led off with a walk, moved to third on a double down the left field line by Tucker Tubbs and raced home on a wild pitch to tie the game. Tubbs moved to third on the ball that got away and then scored on a groundout to the right side of the infield by Chad De La Guerra.
The Spinners added an important insurance run in the eighth as Bryan Hudson lined a one-out single, his second hit of the game and moved to second on a balk. After a flyout and a wild pitch, Gunsolus laced a basehit up the middle and Hudson trotted home for the team's third run.
Lowell put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs on two outs with the aid of two passed balls, a wild pitch and a two-base error.
Lowell starter Almonte (1-0, 1.50), an international free agent who has been in the Red Sox system for three years, made his season debut and was stellar. He allowed just two hits, the one earned run and struck out five in six innings. Edwar Garcia, a member of the Spinners in 2014, came on in relief and battled, putting runners on 1st and 2nd in the seventh but struck out the side. He picked up the save with three innings of relief.
Jeremy Rivera led the team with three hits, and raised his average to .538 on the young season. Hudson, who had a multi-hit game on opening night in Vermont, did it again with two hits as all but one of Lowell's hitters reached base.
Dioscar Romero (NR), who appeared in one game for the 2014 Lowell Spinners before requiring Tommy John surgery, will be on the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
