6-Run Inning Leads Vermont To First Win Of Season 9-1 Over Aberdeen

BURLINGTON, VT --- Lana Akau and Skye Bolt hit back-to-back home runs to leadoff the sixth as the Vermont Lake Monsters snapped a 1-1 tie with six runs in the inning and picked up their its first win of the season with a 9-1 New York-Penn League victory over the Abereen Ironbirds on Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

Akau led off the sixth inning by lining a 2-0 pitch from Ironbirds starter Zachary Albin off the top of the leftfield fence for his first home run of the season and giving Vermont a 2-1 lead. Bolt followed with a home run of his own to rightfield, giving the Lake Monsters their first back-to-back home runs since B.J. Boyd and Ryon Healy vs. Jamestown on August 7, 2013.

That would be just the start of Vermont''s second six-run inning of the young season as the Lake Monsters sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth. Shawn Duinkerk and Gabriel Santana would add RBI single in the inning before Chris Iriart gave Vermont a 9-1 lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Bolt and Duinkerk both had two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Steve Pallares went 3-for-4 with two runs as Vermont (1-3) snapped a seven-game home losing streak dating back to the final four home games of the 2014 season. Lake Monsters starter Dustin Driver allowed one unearned run on two hits over five inning in his first start of the season, while three relievers combined to allow just one hits and strikeout four over four scoreless innings. Derek Beasley (1-0) struckout three in his two innings of relief to earn the victory.

Albin (0-1) was charged with four runs (three earned) over five innings of work to take the loss for Aberdeen (0-4), while reliever Daniel Ayers allowed five runs on three hits and three walks in one inning of work. The Ironbirds, who were held to just three hits in the contest, scored their only run of the game in the third inning when Tad Gold scored on a two-out throwing error by shortstop Mikey White.

Vermont and Aberdeen will continue the three-game series on Tuesday beginning at 7:05 pm at Centennial Field with the first 500 kids receiving a free CHAMP Jersey Drawstring Backpack.
