Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (1-3) fell on Monday night to the Staten Island Yankees (2-2) 10-3 in the first of three games between the two teams.

The Tigers fell behind in the top of the first inning on a picture perfect night at Dodd Stadium. With Gregory Soto (0-1) on the mound the Staten Island Yankees put two quick runs on the board without the aid of a hit. Right fielder Junior Valera walked to start the game, moved to second on a steal and then scored on two wild pitches. After a strikeout short stop Thairo Estrada walked and scored on a steal, error and wild pitch to make it 2-0 Yankees.

Connecticut answered right back in the bottom of the first against Staten Island starter Ethan Carnes (1- 0). With one out in the inning third basemen Jose Zambrano (1) launched a ball over the left field wall for a solo home run making the score 2-1.

The lead was soon pushed back to two as Estrada (1) hit a homerun to left in the top of the third making the score 3-1 Yankees. However, that was the only blemish for reliever Oswaldo Castillo who pitched well and kept the Tigers in the game.

The score remained the same until the top of the sixth. With Jack Fischer in the game designated hitter Jhalan Jackson doubled to start the inning and moved to the third on a single by third basemen Drew Bridges. The next batter, second basemen Ty McFarland singled to score Jackson making the score 4-1 Yankees. Staten Island pushed their lead to 5-1 on an RBI groundout by center fielder Jeff Hendrix.

With Staten Island on top 6-1 Connecticut tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs. Right fielder Ignacio Valdez drove in a run with a double and later scored on an error to cut the deficit in half at 6-3.

However, Staten Island responded in the eighth with two more runs and then tacked on two more in the ninth for a 10-3 lead that would prove to be the final. The offensive hero on this night was Staten Island third basemen Drew Bridges who went 4-5 with two doubles, two RBI's and a run scored.
