Double Win Sunday for Goldeyes

September 6, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg Goldeyes starter Edwin Carl was brilliant and the hitters brought their lumber to Shaw Park on Sunday.

Carl pitched a complete game six-hitter, while the Goldeyes pounded out 13 hits en route to an 8-1 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs in the official game on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the game from Saturday night, a game that was suspended by rain in the top of the 10th inning, the Goldeyes got an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th from Casio Grider to beat the Saltdogs 6-5.

With two wins on Sunday, the Goldeyes extended their winning streak to three games and improved to 46-52 on the season. They also improved to 21-27 at home this season and 4-8 in day games.

However, the big news of the day was Luis Alen's double in the top of the third inning. It was the 130 th double of Alen's Goldeyes career and he is now the career leader in that department, breaking the previous mark of 129 held by Fehlandt Lentini. Alen also holds the Goldeyes' career records for hits and RBI, both set this season.

"Luis has been a true workhorse and a very important player for this ball club and that's why we put him in the leadoff spot this weekend," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "We wanted him to get a couple more at-bats and maybe get that record. It was a rather unorthodox double he got, just a base hit to left field, but he hustled out of the box and took a chance going to second and made it. We're real happy for him and pretty soon I'm sure his name and number will be up there with the other honoured players."

In the official Sunday game, the Goldeyes put away the Saltdogs early.

In the second, Josh Mazzola led off with a single, went to second on a walk to Brad Boyer and then went to third when Tillman Pugh was hit by a pitch. James Boddicker beat out an infield single to score Mazzola and then Luis Alen singled to send home Boyer and Pugh. Casio Grider then walked to load the bases again and Reggie Abercrombie singled to drive in Boddicker with the fourth run of the inning.

Leading 4-0 after two innings, the Goldeyes blew it open in the third. Boyer led off with a single, Pugh singled and then Alen doubled to drive in both baserunners. Grider followed with a double to score Alen and then Reggie Abercrombie singled home Grider to make it 8-0.

With that, Carl coasted to his sixth win of the second half of the season.

The Goldeyes finished with eight runs on 13 hits while the Saltdogs had one runs on six hits.

Carl (6-1, 2.31 ERA) earned the win in his final start of the season for Winnipeg. He also finished with the 11 strikeouts, the highest number of strikeouts in a single game by a Goldeyes pitcher this year. Saltdogs starter Casey Collins (2-3, 5.40) was tagged with the loss.

In the suspended game, the Goldeyes finished with six runs on 11 hits, while the Saltdogs had five runs on 11 hits. Grider, Adam Heisler, Abercrombie and Casey Haerther all had two-hit games for Winnipeg. Grider had the game-winning RBI.

Goldeyes reliever Jailen Peguero (5-4, 3.81 ERA) earned the win. Saltdogs reliever Mackenzie King (1-5, 5.70) was tagged with the loss. Goldeyes starter Matt Jackson pitched brilliantly on Saturday night, allowing only one earned run on 10 scattered hits over nine complete innings of work.

The Goldeyes and Saltdogs will play the final game of this season-ending three-game series on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Shaw Park. Right-hander Tony Smith (3-4, 4.73 ERA) will take to the mound for the Goldeyes, while right-hander Jesse Smith (3-9, 5.53 ERA) will get the start for Lincoln.

It will be Fan Appreciation Day and Trophy Day at the ballpark. Plenty of prizes for all fans and the Goldeyes top players will receive their 2015 awards.

Tickets for the final Goldeyes' game of the season are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
