St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - Ryan Rodebaugh blew just his third save of the season as the Saints fell 9-5 to the New Jersey Jackals in front of 7,918 at CHS Field Saturday night. Alonzo Harris swiped his 38th stolen base of the season in the second inning to tie the Saints franchise record in the loss.
With the Saints leading 5-4 in the ninth, Rodebaugh, who got the final out in the eighth, took looking for his 26th save of the season and facing the top of the order. Peter Mooney singled to center to start the rally for the Jackals and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Anthony Gomez. Rodebaugh brought the power hitting AJ Kirby-Jones to a two strike count before giving up a single to left field that put runners at the corners. Mark Threlkeld followed by ripping a triple to right center that gave the Jackals a 6-5 lead with one swing of the bat. Ryan Rodebaugh continued to slide allowing two more RBI doubles before exiting the ballgame with the blown save and New Jersey leading. Rodebaugh gave up three extra base hits to the Jackals after having entered the ballgame allowing just five all season.
Anthony Claggett made his return to St. Paul for the Jackals and struggled with his command against his former club to put the Jackals down early. Last year's opening day starter for the Saints walked David Espinosa with one out before hitting Ryan Cavan with a pitch to put two on for the heart of the order. Ian Gac singled to right to load up the bases before Ryan Lashley drove a base hit to left field to put the Saints up 1-0. Joey Paciorek grounded out to short to score the second run of the inning and extend the Saints lead to 2-0 after one.
Reyes Dorado was solid through his first two innings of work but was knocked around the third inning in his third start in a Saints uniform. The right hander yielded a leadoff single to the .065 hitter Tim Quinn to start the inning and would give up three straight one out singles. The Jackals walked out of the inning with a 4-2 lead.
After a rocky start against his former team, Claggett clamped down allowing just three hits through the next three innings. He allowed a pair of infield singles that were left stranded in the second, but gave up a solo home run to Alonzo Harris, who bashed a line drive to left field for his 15th homer of the season, to trim the Jackals' lead to 4-3.
Production from the bottom of the order would prove the difference and put the Saints back on top in the sixth. Willie Argo drew a one out walk and stole second to set up an RBI double by Nate Hanson, who smoked a ball to the left field corner. Anthony Phillips hit a ball to right center to snap an 0-11 skid and put the Saints up 5-4 before the Jackals would claw their way back in the ninth.
Chris Peacock worked 2.2 scoreless innings of relief allowing just two hits to go along with a strikeout to bridge the gap to Rodebaugh.
The same two teams will meet in game two of the final three game series of the regular season at CHS Field Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Dustin Crenshaw (14-2, 2.42) to the mound against Jackals RHP Gabriel Perez (8-4, 2.87).The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities area, as well as online at saintsbaseball.com.
