Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Amarillo Thunderheads in game one of three by a final of 2-1 before 3,341 spectators at Newman Outdoor Field on Saturday night.
Taylor Stanton made his final start of the 2015 season on a rainy night in Fargo. The game was delayed one hour and 29 minutes but at 7:29 Stanton tossed his first of 77 pitches.
The right-hander got off to a rough start. He plunked leadoff man Christian Ibarra in the back to start and Ibarra would score later on a sac fly from Geraldo Valentin making it 1-0 Thunderheads.
Amarillo starter Clay Chapman was lights out on the hill to start. Chapman took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before Drew Muren laced a base hit up the middle ending the no-no.Fargo-Moorhead suddenly had the Amarillo starter after Muren reached as Mozingo made contact and reached on a fielder's choice followed by Luke Bailey taking a ball off his shoulder. Chapman then made a costly mistake as he lost control of a fastball on the outside corner that rolled to the backstop, a wild pitch, allowing Mozingo and Bailey to advance to third and second, respectively, with Joe Dunigan at the plate. Facing a 3-0 count, Dunigan had the green light and lifted a double to the gap in left-center plating two and giving the 'Hawks a 2-1 lead.
With the run support, Stanton began to cruise on the hill. Stanton faced the minimum for the next 4.2 innings before yielding a walk to former RedHawk Stefan Gartrell. He would force Valentin to fly out to right to end the inning.
Nick Cooney came on and tossed two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. The lefty allowed a leadoff double to Ricardo Rodriguez in the seventh frame but managed to get out of the inning unscathed. In the eighth a 5-4-3 double erased a leadoff hit-by-pitch.
Mike Nesseth was handed the ball for the top of the ninth in search of his 18th save of the season. The Windom, MN native retired the side on just seven pitches, including a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Stanton (6-4) earned the win in his final start going six strong innings allowing just one run on a pair of hits with two walks and three punch outs. Chapman (4-3) was tagged with the loss though he had an equally impressive night on the mound, going seven innings while giving up two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts.
Fargo-Moorhead improves to 43-55 while Amarillo falters to 44-54 on the season. Game 99/100 is set for tomorrow night, a Sunday night baseball edition in Fargo-Moorhead, as Tyler Herron makes his final start of the 2015 season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m with a 5:40 pre-game show on 740 AM The Fan as Scott Miller will have the call.
