State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Trent Stevenson allowed just two runs in five innings of work on the mound for the State College Spikes, but the Jamestown Jammers turned four double plays, leading to the Spikes' defeat on Saturday night as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Jammers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Stevenson (0-1) took the tough-luck loss after Jamestown (27-22) plated a pair of runs off of him in the first inning. Brian McConkey and Rand Smith followed two base hits and two fielder's choices on potential double-play balls with back-to-back RBI singles of their own to give the Jammers a 2-0 lead. However, Stevenson went on to retire 13 of the last 14 batters he faced in the outing, yielding only one more hit after the first inning for a total of five and striking out two batters.
State College (18-31) got on the board for the first time in the fifth inning. Ashley Ponce led off the frame with a base hit off of Jamestown starter Dejai Oliver (1-1), but was erased on a fielder's choice by Walker Gourley. Gourley then came around to score on Junior Sosa's RBI single to make it 2-1 after five innings of play.
The Spikes would get no closer, however, as the Jammers turned three double plays over the first six innings, with two coming on the ground and one on a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play in the second inning. Jamestown would also bring home an additional run in the seventh on Ryan Goetz's single to score Smith.
State College had a big opportunity in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out against Jamestown closer Alfredo Buret (9). However, Buret would elicit a double-play grounder from Sosa to end the scoring threat and the game.
Sosa and Matt Skirving each had multi-hit performances for the Spikes, with Sosa notching his third RBI in two games. Derek Trent added a double to the State College offensive cause.
Kevin Kleis finished the game for State College by retiring all six batters he faced on four popouts, a flyout and a groundout.
Oliver earned the win for Jamestown by yielding the Spikes' lone run on five hits and two walks while striking out two. Buret allowed a hit to Gourley, walked a batter, and hit a batter, but went to 9-for-9 in save chances on the year.
Sunday, the scene shifts to Russell Diethrick Park in Jamestown as the Spikes and Jammers play the first game of a two-game series there at 6:05 p.m. State College will have right-hander Matt Benedict (2-3) on the mound, while Jamestown goes with right-hander Matthew Neil (1-3).
