STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Jamestown Jammers jumped out to an early lead then held off the State College Spikes, 3-1, to snap a two-game losing streak at Medlar Park Saturday night.

Jamestown scored two runs in the first inning then utilized four double plays, including one in the ninth inning, to halt a surging State College team. The victory means Jamestown (27-22) now sits two games behind Auburn for the division lead.

Ryan Goetz led the team both offensively and defensively. He had two hits with a RBI, and he also helped account for 14 total outs with 10 assists and four put outs. Rand Smith added a double with a RBI en route to his second multi-hit game in as many days.

In the first inning, the Jammers had runners at the corners with two outs thanks to a pair of singles and fielder's choices before Brian McConkey slapped one into right field to get the the first run on the board. Then, Smith bounced one back through the middle to make it 2-0.

The defense would take over from there as State College threatened in the first and fourth only to get denied before finally breaking through in the fifth. With two outs, Junior Sosa lined one into left field to score Walker Gourley from second before Dejai Oliver was able to escape the jam.

In the seventh, Jamestown tacked on an insurance run. Smith led off with a double and moved to third on a fielder's choice. Goetz followed with a frozen rope to right to push the Jammers back in front by two.

State College would bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning, but Frankie Reed managed to work out of the situation with a pair of fly outs.

Then, in the ninth, State College loaded the bases on a single, hit by pitch and a walk with one out, but the Jamestown defense came up big again as Goetz helped turn the team's fourth double play of the night to end the game.

Oliver earned his first professional win after tossing five frames, giving up five hits and striking out five, while Alfredo Buret earned his ninth save after escaping the jam in the ninth.

Sosa and Matt Skirving both had two hits for State College.

The two teams will now head to Jamestown for two more games starting Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
