Cyclones fall to Staten Island

Brooklyn, NY -- The Brooklyn Cyclones (26-23) returned to MCU Park after totaling nine runs the previous night in a five-run win, but fell to the Staten Island Yankees (34-14) by a score of 6-4 in front of 8,724 fans on Saturday night.

The Baby Bombers got on the board first in the top of the first inning. After the first three batters reached base, Cody Grice grounded into a force out that scored Mason Williams, who lead off the frame with a single to the shortstop. Cyclones starter Jeff Walters (2-5) had not allowed a run in the first inning previous to this start.

Brooklyn took their only lead of the night in the bottom of the second. Travis Taijeron plated the first Cyclones' run with a single to centerfield that scored Cole Frenzel, who walked to lead off the inning. Taijeron entered the day with 42 hits and is hitting .357 (25-for-70) since July 17th. The Cyclones took a temporary lead soon after when Amauris Valdez grounded into a double play that scored Brian Harrison from third.

Staten Island did the most damage in the top of the fifth inning, which also happened to be when the weather decided not to cooperate. The Baby Bombers took a lead that they wouldn't relinquish by scoring four runs amidst a sudden downpour. A single on a line drive to left by Casey Stevenson evened the score before chasing starter Jeffrey Walters in favor of righthander Ernesto Yanez . The native of Venezuela couldn't put an end to the inning as he allowed a two-run triple by Cody Grice and an RBI double by Reymond Nunez. After being named the New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week on July 27th, Walters lasted 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Brian Harrison gave the Coney Island faithful a glimmer of hope with a two-run laser of a home run off the light tower in left in the bottom of the seventh. The shot narrowed the deficit to a run but was all the offense Brooklyn could muster. Staten Island added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a single to right by Cody Grice that scored Benjamin Gamel, who had doubled with two outs.

Brooklyn gave a last-ditch effort by putting the tying run at the plate after Cole Frenzel singled to center with one out, but Branden Pinder collected his tenth save of the season by tallying consecutive strikeouts of Brian Harrison and Travis Taijeron.

Brooklyn heads back to Richmond County Ballpark tomorrow, Sunday, at 4 p.m., as Brett Mitchell (0-0, -,--) will make his Cyclones' debut versus southpaw Evan DeLuca (3-1, 3.02 ERA). The series concludes on Monday at 7 p.m., as it will be Italian Heritage Night. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Brooklyn Pride T-Shirt courtesy of Lutheran Medical Center. Following the game, fans will also be invited on to the field for a special autograph and photo session as part of Meet The Cyclones Monday.
