Auburn Doubledays News Release
Niles, OH - On a night that saw the threat of rain delay the game's start an hour, the Auburn Doubledays weren't able to get their offense jump-started as they fell 5-3 to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
With the loss, the Doubledays fell back into a first-place tie with Mahoning Valley in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League.
Auburn got on the board early, scoring a run in the top of the first when Matt Skole doubled in Caleb Ramsey from second. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived. Two two-out walks to the Scrappers in the bottom of the first turned into runs when Todd Hankins tripled to right-center, driving in two runs. Two pitches later, Hankins came home to score on a wild pitch, giving the Scrappers a 3-1 lead.
The Doubledays countered with a run in the top of the second, using a leadoff triple by Justin Miller to get their second run on a sac fly off the bat of Billy Burns. But the Scrappers would answer, scoring a run of their own in the third on an RBI single by Jordan Smith, putting the Scrappers up 4-2.
Auburn fought back, plating a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Jeremy Mayo, closing the game to 4-3. But Auburn starter Nathan Karns struggled with his control in the fifth, hitting a batter, walking another, and giving up and RBI single to Jordan Smith, pulling Mahoning Valley back up two runs.
The Doubledays could get no closer.
Ben Hawkins came out of the bullpen for Auburn and threw three and two-thirds of scoreless baseball, allowing just one base-hit and keeping the Doubledays in the game. Unfortunately, Auburn was unable to get that clutch hit, stranding men in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings before being struck out in order in the ninth.
The Auburn loss evens the series with Mahoning Valley at a game apiece as Auburn will travel home Sunday and take on the Scrappers in game three of the four game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm at Falcon Park on Tompkins Trust Kids and Family Fun Day at the park. For tickets, please visit www.auburndoubledays.com.
