Dorados Assigned Former NFL No. 1 Pick

Hidalgo, Texas. - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 (af2) announced today that former NFL first round pick Chris Canty has been officially assigned to the team by the league office.

Canty, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound WR/DB, started his pro-career in 1997 with the New England Patriots as a cornerback after being selected in the first round (29th overall) in the 1997 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he played in 16 games and recorded two sacks. He also returned four kicks for 115 yards with a 28.8 yard average.

In 1998, Canty started nine of sixteen games for the Patriots and recorded 11 kick-off returns for 198 yards and 16 punt returns for 170 yards. Defensively, Canty recorded 50 total tackles (45 solo), six pass deflections, one sack and one interception for 12 yards. He moved on to play for both Seattle and New Orleans before leaving the NFL after the 2000 season.

Canty resumed his football career in 2005, first in training camp with the Las Vegas Gladiators (AFL) and then with the af2 Tulsa Talons. He started eight of 15 games as a defensive specialist in Tulsa. Canty posted 59 tackles, two interceptions for 18 yards, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries with one kick return for 39 yards on special teams. He finished the season second on the team in tackles with 59 (48 solo).

The Voorhees, N.J., native, played seven games for the Las Vegas Gladiators (AFL) this season and was second in tackles (45.5, 42 solo) before being released last week.

The 30-year-old Houston native attended Kansas State University on a football scholarship and was a three-time All-American as a defensive back.

The Dorados look to rebound this Saturday after last week's loss at Tulsa. Kickoff vs. the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings is set for 7:30 p.m. at Obra Homes Field at Dodge Arena.
