Dogs Strikeout 14 Times, Fall to Saints

St. Paul, Minn. - St. Paul starter Vinny Nittoli struck out ten batters in six innings in his first career professional start, and the Chicago Dogs fell to the Saints 5-1 Tuesday, dropping their second consecutive series.

The Dogs were shut out through their first eight innings at the plate, mustering just two hits against the duo of Nittoli and Saints reliever, Jake Matthys. Chicago finally got on the board in the ninth, scoring their lone run on a double from Craig Maddox.

Crooked numbers again came back to haunt Dogs pitching, as Chicago spot-starter, Tommy Thorpe allowed three runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning before being pulled from the game. Thorpe's final line registered six hits, five earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings of work.

Saints right fielder Max Murphy posted his second straight big night at the plate. Murphy reached base three times, collecting a walk and two hits, the biggest of which came in the form of a two-run triple in the three-run bottom of the third for St. Paul. Murphy is 4-7 with a walk, a double, a triple, and five runs batted in through the first two games of the series.

Noah Perio Jr. delivered the back-breaker for the Saints with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning. The hit chased Thorpe from the game, and proved to be all the Saints would need en route to their fourth win of the season.

Tyson Perez pitched effectively out of the bullpen for Chicago for the second time in three days. Perez logged two and one-third innings of hitless ball, striking out two.

Chicago first baseman, Treysen Vavra extended his modest hitting streak to five games with a ninth inning single.

The Dogs and Saints will conclude their series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. from CHS Field. Chicago will send opening night starter, Josh Goossen-Brown to the mound looking to avoid a sweep, while St. Paul counters with its opening night starter, Jake Esch.
