Cleburne Railroaders News Release
CLEBURNE, Texas - Rafael Palmeiro hit his first homer of 2018, but the Cleburne Railroaders fell 4-3 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in 11 innings at The Depot on Monday night.
Palmeiro homered to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning, a solo shot to right-center that led off the frame.
Cleburne (2-2) took an early lead after K.C. Huth singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the first, and Cameron Monger added his first homer of 2018 in the second.
Dylan Mouzakes cruised the first time through the order, but the RedHawks (3-1) recorded three consecutive singles and tied the game in the fourth after a wild pitch scored Randolph Oduber and an errant throw back to the plate allowed Mendonca to come home.
The RedHawks tied the game without a hit in the eighth, after Roman Gomez issued back-to-back walks and a Mendonca groundout scored Brennan Metzger following Oduber's sacrifice bunt that moved the runners into scoring position.
In the bottom of the ninth, Levi Scott led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on Rafael Palmeiro's second hit of the night - a one-out single to right. But a strikeout and flyout helped Fargo-Moorhead out of the jam.
In the 11th, Maikol Gonzalez reached for the third time on the night with a one-out single off of Shawn Blackwell, and a two-out Metzger triple into the gap in right-center scored the eventual game-winning run.
RedHawks starter Trey McNutt went seven innings and allowed three runs on three hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts. Collectively, the Railroaders struck out a season-high 17 times.
The series continues on Tuesday when RHP Jared Mortensen makes his Cleburne debut against LHP Sebastian Kerrey. First pitch time is 7:06 and tickets can be purchased at www.railroaderbaseball.com or by calling (817) 301-2047.
