'Dogs Pick Up Point, But Tie Franchise-long Losing Streak
March 21, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs snapped a franchise-long seven-game pointless streak with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Toronto Marlies on Friday night at Copps Coliseum. With the loss, Hamilton's eighth straight, the Bulldogs tied their franchise-long losing streak set back on November 6th-to-21st during the 2004-2005 season. The âDogs record now drops to 31-29-3-5 through 68 games on the campaign.
After a scoreless opening period, Kyle Chipchura struck first for the Bulldogs with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 13:12 of the middle stanza. Chipchura walked into the Marlies zone and fired a wrist shot that bounced off of netminder Justin Pogge and into the back of the net.
Toronto evened the score 1-1 just 20 seconds into the third period when former âDog Bryan Muir notched his second goal of the season. Andy Wozniewski and Peter Tsimikalis earned helpers on the play.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead at 8:15 of the third frame on the power play courtesy of Daniel Corso's seventh goal of the season. Matt D'Agostini's attempted pass in front of the Marlies' net bounced right to Corso who chipped home the go-ahead tally.
Jaime Sifers responded for Toronto with just 1:11 left in regulation play, tying the game 2-2 with his first marker of the campaign. Colin Murphy and Robbie Earl picked up assists on the goal.
Murphy then notched the overtime game-winning goal for the Marlies at 3:51 of the extra frame. The unassisted goal was Murphy's 10th of the season.
Between the pipes, Cedrick Desjardins made 40 saves on 43 shots in a losing effort for Hamilton, while Pogge stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced to earn the win for Toronto.
The Bulldogs won the special teams battle, going 1-for-8 on the power play and a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill with a shorthanded goal.
The defending Calder Cup Champion Hamilton Bulldogs return to action tomorrow night (Saturday, March 22nd) at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto to take on the Marlies in a rematch of tonight's tilt.
