Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Norfolk Admirals General Manager Claude Loiselle today announced that the Admirals have signed center Dana Tyrell (DAYN-uh tigh-REHL) and defenseman Sean Hurley to Amateur Tryout Contracts (ATO). Both are expected to be in the lineup tonight at Scope against the Lowell Devils, with Tyrell wearing number 49 and Hurley wearing number 4.
Tyrell, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound center from Airdrie, Alberta, will make his professional debut with the Admirals. He skated in 68 games as an alternate captain with the Prince George Cougars (WHL) this season, scoring 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points and 47 penalty minutes. Tyrell led the team in goals, assists, points and power play goals (13).
The Tampa Bay Lightning drafted Tyrell in the second round (47th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. In 210 career games with Prince George, he has 62 goals and 77 assists for 139 points and 144 penalty minutes. He also has one goal and six assists in 20 post-season games with the Cougars.
Tyrell will not reach his nineteenth birthday until April 23. He will become the first 18-year-old in the history of the Norfolk Admirals. The youngest player in Norfolk Admirals history was Michael Blunden when he laced up the skates at 19 years, three months and ten days on an amateur tryout contract during the 2005-06 season.
Hurley, a 6-foot-3, 211-pound defenseman from Rutland, Vermont, just completed his fourth season at Brown University. The 24-year-old was team captain and team MVP, notching three goals (all on the power play) and 16 assists for 19 points in 31 games during his senior year.
In his 126-game collegiate career, Hurley scored 22 goals (17 on the power play) and added 57 assists for 79 points and 115 penalty minutes. He was a two-time selection to First Team All-Ivy, two-time team MVP, three-time selection to the ECAC All-Academic Squad, and an ECAC All-Rookie Team selection.
Hurley also played one season with the Chicago Steel of the USHL before joining Brown. He spent two seasons with Northfield Mount Hermon, where he was captain during the 2002-03 season. Hurley was also a member of the Rutland High School football team that won the 2000 Vermont State Championship.
Hurley made his professional debut in Worcester last Sunday while on an ATO with the Sharks. He played one goal with Worcester and did not register a point before being released.
The Admirals will continue an eight-game homestand tonight and tomorrow night when they entertain the Lowell Devils. Both games will begin at 7:15.
