Dogs Offense Cools off in Game One Loss to Sioux Falls; Game Two Postponed

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Sioux Falls Canaries took advantage of a quiet Dogs offense on the back of starter Taylor Hill (W, 2-1), winning 4-2 in seven innings on a gloomy day on Tuesday at Impact Field.

Game two of the doubleheader was postponed due to severe weather in the area.

Chicago stranded 10 men on base, including seven in the first four innings, on a day where they registered eight hits and two Dogs had multi-hit games. Victor Roache continued his hot streak with two doubles and a single in a 3-for-3 day.

Dogs starter Austin Wright (L, 0-2) was untouchable to start the day, retiring the first seven Canaries he faced while striking out five. Unfortunately for Wright, his day was cut short after he took a ball off his throwing hand that resulted in a cut that wouldn't stop bleeding, despite Wright staying in the ballgame for a few batters after that. After loading the bases on two singles and a fielder's choice, Pedro Echemendia came on in relief with two outs. Canaries designated hitter Adrian Nieto laced a single into right field, scoring Andrew Ely and Brett Vertigan.

The Dogs answered back in the third by way of a Tony Rosselli single that scored David Olmedo-Barrera, who reached on a two-out double. Olmedo-Barrera finished 2-for-4 in his first game back from injury.

In the fifth inning, the top of the Sioux Falls order did the damage as center fielder Brett Vertigan hit a one-out single off Echemendia, which was followed up by a triple off the bat of Mitch Glasser to push the lead to 3-1 for the Canaries. One batter later, Adrian Nieto struck again, this time by way of the sacrifice fly, scoring Glasser, giving him his team-leading 13th RBI.

Chicago showed some life in the seventh and were able to cut into the Sioux Falls lead as designated hitter Kelly Dugan drove home Olmedo-Barrera with one out. Canaries reliever Ryan Flores struck out Tony Rosselli and Keon Barnum to shut the door and earn his second save of the year.

The Dogs take on the Canaries in games two and three of the series on Wednesday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. at Impact Field. D.J. Snelten (1-0) is set to go for Chicago against Sam Bragg (1-0) in the first contest, and game two will feature Luke Westphal (2-0) vs. Keaton Steele (0-1).
