HAMILTON, ON - Tomas Plekanec had two goals on three shots and led the Bulldogs over the Edmonton Road Runners by a score of 7-4 at Copps Coliseum on Friday night.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead in the first period by scoring two goals in 25 seconds. At 2:45, Antti Miettinen scored his first goal as a Bulldog with a long wrist shot that fooled goaltender Tyler Moss. Then rookie Corey Locke posted his 14th goal of the season at the 3:10 mark.
Edmonton got on the scoreboard at 10:19 of the first period when Jamie Wright tallied his 11th goal of the campaign. Kyle Brodziak and Doug Lynch recorded assists on the 2-1 goal.
With two more quick goals, this time 52 seconds apart, Hamilton built a 4-1 first period lead. Captain Jason Ward scored his 12th goal of the season at 12:54 and All-Star Tomas Plekanec notched his team leading 18th goal at 13:46 on the power play.
There was a series of goaltending changes for Edmonton in the first period. Tyler Moss started the game and was pulled at 3:10 after the first two Bulldogs goals in favour of Michael Morrison. At 4:43, Moss returned to the net, only to be removed again at 13:46 after the third and fourth Bulldogs goals. Morrison played the remainder of the game for the Road Runners.
The Bulldogs netted two more goals in the second period to increase their lead to 6-1. Plekanec scored the first of the two markers at 1:37 from Chris Higgins and Miettinen. With the goal, Plekanec tied former Bulldog Michel Riesen for third in All-time Bulldogs scoring with 61 goals. Andrei Kostitsyn posted the other goal of the period at 10:07 from Ward and Gavin Morgan.
The Road Runners would add two quick goals 24 seconds apart in the third period. Sean McAslan scored at 8:00 and then set up Toby Petersen at 8:24 to make the score 6-3. Hamilton responded at 9:40 when Steve Ott scored his 13th of the season. The Road Runners rounded out the scoring on the power play at 11:58 when Brad Winchester made the score 7-4.
Ten different Bulldogs had a point in the first period. Twelve different Bulldogs had at least one point in the game. Five different Bulldogs had multiple point games, including Jason Ward (1g, 2a), Tomas Plekanec (2a, 0a), Antti Miettinen (1g, 1a), Steve Ott (1g, 1a) and Chris Higgins (0g, 2a).
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow night, Saturday, February 11th against the first place overall Rochester Americans at Copps Coliseum.
