Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-7) fell to a .500 record with a 3-2 loss against the Lincoln Saltdogs (6-8) in front of 3,020 fans at the Birdcage Thursday night.
The Saltdogs scored first, getting on the board in the top of the third inning. Jay Yaconetti was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second when Ross McCoy walked. A single by Tony Garcia loaded the bases. Federico Balet reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Yaconetti from third giving the Saltdogs a 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last long. With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Cameron Coughlan doubled to right centerfield and came around to score on a single by Juan Figueroa. At the end of three innings, the game was tied 1-1.
McCoy led off the top of the seventh with a double to right center. Garcia singled to right field placing runners on the corners. McCoy crossed home on a wild pitch by Lenny Bays, giving the Saltdogs a 2-1 lead. That run was the deciding run in the contest.
Dan Reichert (6-4) pitched a complete game for Lincoln allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven Canaries' batters. Lenny Bays (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite striking out seven batters in three innings of relief.
Abner Arroyo was unable to continue his 21-game hitting streak going 0-for-3 in the game. Arroyo left the game in the bottom of the ninth with an injury.
The Canaries and Saltdogs play the second game of the series Friday night. After the game, there will be "Friday Night Fireworks."
