St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (July 19, 2007) - The second half of the season has been all about pitching for the St. Paul Saints as they earned their fifth shutout of the season with a 5-0 blanking of the Sioux City Explorers on Thursday night at Midway Stadium in front of 6,007.

The Saints won their fifth consecutive ballgame and, at 11-4, are now tied with the Explorers atop the Northern Division as Adam Brandenburg provided another quality start. He hurled 7.0 shutout innings allowing just three hits while walking three and striking out seven. The only real jam he got into was in the fourth inning when he loaded the bases with two outs, but struck out Ramon Navarro to end the inning. Brandenburg earned his fifth victory of the season.

As impressive as Brandenburg was, he may have been one upped by the man that relieved him for the final two innings, Byron Embry. He struck out all six batters he faced, two looking and four swinging. The Saints pitching staff allowed a season low three hits while striking out 13, one shy of tying their season high.

The Saints got all the offense they needed in the fourth without hitting a ball out of the infield. Alex Fonseca led off with an infield single to short. Fonseca was 2-5 on the night with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Adam Bourassa followed with an infield single to second. After a double steal put runners at second and third Marcel Longmire made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center. With two outs Adam Olow walked and a catcher's interference on Ben Thomas loaded the bases. Skip Adams hit a grounder that went off the glove on a backhanded attempt by shortstop Brandon Jones which went into leftfield scoring two and giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.

Scooter Jordan extended his streak of reaching base safely to 43 games with a fifth inning single.

The same two teams meet Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (7-3, 4.22) to the mound against Explorers RHP Rory James (1-4, 5.35). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network and heard on KBGY 107.5 FM. It is Bad News Bears Night presented by Goldberg Bail Bonds.
