Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (July 19, 2007) - The Sioux Falls Canaries will be at home for the next seven days as the team returns from the All-Star Break. The home stretch of the 2007 season begins with a familiar face returning, a big name leaving, an attempt at a league record, and a Cheryl Ladd Bobblehead Giveaway.
Tonight the Canaries welcome back second baseman Trevor Lawhorn. Lawhorn started the 2007 season with the Canaries before getting picked up by the Seattle Mariners organization. Prior to getting signed by the Mariners, Lawhorn hit .286 in 13 games with the Canaries, blasting four home runs and recording 10 RBI. Lawhorn was assigned to the Mariners Single-A affiliate, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. In 29 games with the Timber Rattlers, Lawhorn hit .252 with 3 HR and 20 RBI. Lawhorn was released by the Mariners last week and rejoins the Canaries for tonight's game.
The Canaries have opened a roster spot for Lawhorn's return by trading outfielder Wil Quintana to the Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am League. Quintana hit .312 with 11 HR and 26 RBI in the first month of the 2007 season, but struggled up until being traded. In his last 28 games with the Canaries, Quintana has hit just one homer and his batting average dropped 80 points to .232. In return for trading Quintana to Atlantic City, the Canaries will receive a player to be named later.
The new look to the Canaries line-up will be unveiled tonight at the Birdcage when the Canaries host the Lincoln Saltdogs in the opening game of a four-game series. Canaries first baseman Abner Arroyo comes into tonight's game with a 21-game hitting streak, one game shy of the league record. In 2006, Lincoln outfielder Pichi Balet established the American Association record by hitting safely in 22 consecutive games. St. Paul Saints catcher Marcel Longmire equaled the league record earlier this season.
As Arroyo attempts to tie the league record with a hit in tonight's game, the Canaries will celebrate Cheryl Ladd. Ladd will be immortalized in a Sioux Falls Canaries Bobblehead, the next in the team's Famous South Dakotan Bobblehead Series. The former star of Charlie's Angels joins the likes of Pat O'Brien, Mount Rushmore, Larry McKenney, and the Zip Tower, as South Dakotans honored by the Canaries. The giveaway, presented by Royal River Casino, will see bobbleheads given away to 1,000 random fans during tonight's game.
