Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs took the opening game of the series against the Hickory Crawdads, 10-3, before 2,246 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Tuesday night .
After the RiverDogs (35-22) jumped in front with six runs through the first three innings against RHP Nick Martinez (L, 2-2), the Crawdads (31-26) got on the board in the top of the fourth. With one away, CF Zach Cone singled and quickly moved to second on a walk by DH Jeremy Williams. Both runners moved up ninety feet on a ground out, before a fielding error by SS Cito Culver, enabling Cone to score and chipping the deficit to 6-1.
Charleston added another in the bottom of the fifth inning against LHP Andrew Faulkner, before the 'Dads answered with a tally in the top of the sixth. Cone again started the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a Williams single. After Robinson worked a walk, the Crawdads had the bases loaded with no one out, but LHP Fred Lewis dealt back-to-back strikeouts. 1B Jhonny Gomez was able to draw an RBI walk to force in Cone, but Lewis got out of the inning with no further damage being done and the RiverDogs in the 7-2 lead.
An RBI single by Charleston 3B Dante Bichette, Jr. in the bottom of the sixth tacked on an eighth run for the RiverDogs, but the 'Dads again battled the deficit back down to five runs in the top of the seventh. SS Hanser Alberto belted a one-out double, and then darted home on an RBI single by Williams one out later, cutting it to 8-3.
However, solo home runs by 1B Reymond Nunez and CF Mason Williams in the bottom of the seventh stretched the lead back out and accounted for the 10-3 final score in the RiverDogs win.
