Dogs Bite Curve in Series Opener

Curve, Pa.-The Portland Sea Dogs scored five runs in the first three innings to defeat the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night, 5-2 in front of 6,002 fans at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Adalberto Santos worked a walk against Sea Dogs starter Keith Couch in the third inning to extend his on-base streak to 17 games.

Portland (58-63) jumped out to an early lead getting to Curve starter Casey Sadler for single runs in the first and second innings, to take a 2-0 advantage. The Sea Dogs broke the game open with three runs in the top half of the third inning to make it a 5-0 game.

Sadler (10-6) worked four innings allowing five runs on eight hits while walking and striking out one. Kenn Kasparek pitched brilliantly in relief throwing three scoreless frames. He allowed only two hits and one walk, while striking out a pair. Kasparek has thrown 14.1 consecutive innings of scoreless relief over his last five appearances. Quinton Miller and Jason Townsend also each tossed scoreless innings in relief.

The Curve (55-65) offense got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Gregory Polanco began the inning with his second triple of the season to deep center field. He later scored on an RBI groundout by Justin Howard. Howard has driven home a run in each of his last four games.

Couch (9-3) went seven strong innings for the Sea Dogs surrendering just the one run on eight hits.

Polanco turned in three hits for the Curve offense. Carlos Paulino and Alex Dickerson each had a pair of hits in the defeat.

Wednesday night's contest with the Sea Dogs features a postgame fireworks show presented by Ravine Ink & Thread. It is also a 4-Pack Wednesday presented by WALY 103.9. Fans can receive four tickets, four hot dogs, and four regular 22 oz. sodas all for just $35 thanks to WALY 103.9. Galliker's Curve Kids' Club members can come down to the field for a pregame autograph session with their favorite Curve stars. Members of the club are also asked to come to the game dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters. Kids can run the bases following the game.

RHP Nick Kingham (3-3, 3.02) will take the mound for the Curve in the second game of the series against the Sea Dogs at 7p.m. It will be the first start against Portland this season. He will be opposed LHP Chris Hernandez (0-0, 1.42). Hernandez will make his second start of the season for the Sea Dogs on Wednesday, after going 6.1 innings and allowing just one run in his first Eastern League outing against the Richmond Flying Squirrels on August 7.
