
Dodgers Recall Herrera, Rodriguez Joins Topes

The Los Angeles Dodger recalled Elian Herrera today, May 7, after sending Jerry Hairston to the 15-day disabled list. Herrera is making his second stint with the Dodgers. The 27-year-old switch hitter made his Major League debut last season with Los Angeles on May 15. IF Leo Rodriguez has been activated from Extended Spring Training and joins the Topes today.
In 27 games this season with the Topes, Herrera is batting .250 (29-for-126) with 20 runs scored, four doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI and five stolen bases. All of Herrera's home runs, doubles and 15 of his 16 RBI have come at home this season, where he is hitting .309 in 19 games. The Dominican import also holds a .344 (11-for-32) batting average with runners in scoring position in 2013. He has made 17 starts at second, three starts at third, four starts in left and two in center with Albuquerque this year. This is his eighth season in the Dodgers organization. The 5-foot-10 utility player was signed by the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent in 2003.
Herrera played 67 games with the Dodgers last year, hitting .251 (47-for-187) with 10 doubles, a triple, a home runs, 26 runs scored, 17 RBI and four stolen bases. In that first Major League season with Los Angeles, he spent time at every position but first base, catcher and pitcher.
Rodriguez has spent three seasons in the Dodgers organization after being signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic. The 21-year-old infielder spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons in the Dodgers Dominican Summer League hitting a combined .277 (96-for-346) in 112 games. The 5-foot-11 righty played 35 games for the Arizona League Dodgers in 2012, hitting .217 (26-for-120) with four doubles, a triple, a home run, 25 runs scored, three stolen bases and 15 RBI.
The Topes begin an eight-game road trip tonight with an 8:05 p.m. start in Tucson. RHP Sean White (1-3, 5.18) takes the bump against RHP Sean O'Sullivan (1-2, 5.34) in tonight's contest. After four games with the Padres, Albuquerque plays Las Vegas for four more before returning to open an eight-game homestand on Thursday, May 16.
