Memphis Wins Homestand Opener over Sacramento, 3-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds scored a pair of runs in consecutive innings to come from behind and beat the Sacramento River Cats, 3-2, in the opener of four-game series on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.

Nick Additon (2-1) hurled his best pitching performance of the season for the victory, striking out eight batters over six innings (both season highs) while scattering four hits for two runs. It was his first quality start of the season and the 13th total for the Redbirds pitching staff.

Kolten Wong and Brock Peterson each had two hits for Memphis, while Ryan Jackson extended his season-best hitting streak to seven games.

Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Oscar Taveras' cranked an RBI double right field to score Wong, who reached on a base hit.

Back-to-back jacks by Josh Horton and Jemile Weeks gave Sacramento a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. The last two players to homer consecutively against the Redbirds were Jedd Gyorko and Matt Clark off Shelby Miller on May 21, 2012 at Tucson.

Memphis tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Greg Garcia lined a two-out double down the third base line. Two batters later after a Justin Christian Walk, Wong lined an RBI double up the middle to score Garcia from second base.

The Redbirds scored their go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Sacramento starter Andrew Werner (2-5) as Brock Peterson led off with a double. With runners on the corners and no outs after a Ryan Jackson base hit, Jermaine Curtis hit into a 6-4-3 double play, allowing Peterson to score the game-winning run from third.

Marc Rzepczynski and Mitchell Boggs each threw shutout frames before Victor Marte slammed the door for his seventh save.

The Redbirds and River Cats continue their series at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning in front of thousands of kids attending Education Day at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Maikel Cleto (0-1, 10.95) will man the bump against right-hander Bruce Billings (2-1, 6.64).
