Iowa Cubs News Release

Colorado Springs, CO - Tyler Chatwood allowed four singles and recorded eight strikeouts while going the distance to lead the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (18-12) to a 5-0 win over the Iowa Cubs (11-18) at Security Service Field tonight. Chatwood, just optioned from Colorado today, becomes the first Sky Sox pitcher to throw a complete game shutout at Security Service Field since Cory Vance went the distance to blank the Memphis Redbirds on August 15, 2003.

Cubs' starter Nick Struck (0-3) matched Chatwood early as he struck out four of the first five batters to start the game. The game was scoreless into the fourth when Struck walked Charlie Blackmon to start the inning. Ryan Wheeler followed with a bunt hit to bring up Ben Paulsen, who drove in both runners with a double down the left field line that gave the Sky Sox a 2-0 lead.

The Sox added to their lead in the sixth. Wheeler led off with a double down the right field line and went to third when Dave Sappelt mishandled the ball in the corner for an error. After a groundout, Struck intentionally walked former I-Cub Tyler Colvin to bring up catcher Matt McBride who had grounded into a double play in the second inning. With McBride at the plate, Struck was called for a balk as he started a pickoff move to first and then stopped. After a meeting at the mound, McBride hit the next pitch for a two-run homer to left that completed the Sox' scoring.

Chatwood (2-0) needed just 90 pitches to record his second career complete game and shutout. The last pitcher to throw a nine-inning, complete game shutout against the Cubs was Mike Fiers for Nashville on August 31, 2011. Tonight marked the first time the Cubs have ever been shut out in Colorado Springs.

The Cubs and Sky Sox continue this series tomorrow with a 12:05 p.m. Central time start. RH Barret Loux (2-1, 5.74) will be activated from the disabled list and start for the Cubs against RH Aaron Cook (0-3, 7.40) for the Sky Sox. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 11:45.
