Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - One of the byproducts of the hockey off-season is curiosity. Fans wouldn't be fans if they didn't have questions. Who's coming back? Who's new? How will the team stack up against the rest of the league? When do I get to chuck my stuffed animal onto the ice without getting kicked out of the arena?
The answers to many of these questions are still a little way off. However, the answer to the latter question is now available: November 26th. That is the date for the annual Teddy Bear Toss, just one of several promotional dates announced today by the Bakersfield Condors.
The 2005-06 promotional schedule mixes new giveaways and events with some old favorites, beginning with the Magnetic Schedule Giveaway for the October 22nd regular-season opener. November 5th is the team's Dodgeball Giveaway, followed by the first of five Student ID Nights on November 17th. The November 22nd Field Trip Day & Businessperson's Special features an early 10:30am face-off, ideal for an extended lunch break or an opportunity for schoolchildren to take part in unique lessons and projects with hockey as the backdrop.
On December 9th, one fan will receive the head- to-toe works for our Personal Makeover giveaway. The December 30th home game will feature a Christian Concert for ticket holders featuring a national touring band. Last year, a postgame performance by Hawk Nelson brought 8,000 fans to the Rabobank Arena. This will be followed by the New Year's Eve game on December 31st. New Year's Eve weekend will also kick off the 2nd annual Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-thon, which raised over $23,000 last year for Link to Life.
The start of 2006 coincides with the team's Backpack Giveaway, just in time for the end of the schools' Holiday Break. Some newer promotions include a Car Magnet Giveaway on January 20th, "Oildale vs. Rosedale" Trucker/Military Hat Night on January 21st and Poker Night on February 4th. On February 17th, the Bakersfield Condors will celebrate the 2006 Winter Olympic Games by wearing and raffling Team USA 2006 jerseys, the same design to be worn by the Olympic Team competing in Torino, Italy.
Rounding out the regular season appearances will be Dora the Explorer on February 18th, the Oakland Raiderettes on March 11th, and SpongeBob Squarepants for the regular-season finale on April 8th.
Other promotions of note include the Skate with the Condors on January 15th, the return of the ZOOperstars on February 3rd, the Youth Jersey Giveaway on March 10th and the Bobblehead Doll Giveaway on March 18th. Adults attending the March 17th Condors game will each receive a California State Lottery ticket for a chance to win millions of dollars. Fans will also have a second opportunity to participate in the World's Largest Pillow Fight on March 31st, as the Condors once again attempt to break the World Record. The Condors will give a nod to their predecessors on April Fools Day (April 1st) when they don the jerseys of the Bakersfield Fog, who took the ice at the Convention Center from 1995 to 1998.
Charity and collection nights are a mainstay at Condors games, and will again dominate the schedule. The annual Teddy Bear Toss has made an indelible impression on the youth of Kern County, and on those who have been witness to the spectacle. On November 26th fans will have the chance to break last season's record of 7,149 stuffed animals donated, which brought the six-year total to 26,135. Three jersey raffles and auctions are interspersed through the season, with the first on November 19th, another on February 17th and the last on April 1st. The game worn jersey auctions have brought in over $200,000 in team history. The annual Project Warm Families Coat Collection, which brought in 2,860 coats last year, is scheduled for November 30th.
"As always, our #1 goal is to show fans a good time," said President Matthew Riley. "We're bringing back our most popular events, and we've tried to come up with some new things that will wow people. It's going to be a fantastic year in Condorstown."
The 2005-06 Bakersfield Condors season opens in 53 days at home on October 22nd against the Victoria Salmon Kings.
