St. George RoadRunners News Release

The St. George RoadRunners opened up play in the second half of the GBL season with a 5-2 win over the host Orange County Flyers on Thursday night at Goodwin Field.

Raymar Diaz broke a string of four consecutive losses with his most dominant start of the year. He pitched seven shutout innings allowing three hits, striking out four and walking three to improve to 3-6 on the season.

OC starter Jake Renshaw (0-2) matched Diaz through the first three innings, but found trouble in the RoadRunner fourth. Brett Flowers led off with a double to center and scored a batter later with a RBI single from Yosvany Almario. A single by Henry Calderon pushed Almario to second. Joe Dickerson, debuting for St. George, hit a grounder to first, but an errant throw on the force attempt at second allowed Almario to score. The lead pushed to 3-0 on a Scott Clement single past third. With two out, C.J. Lang and Jermy Acey each added RBI singles to build the STG lead to 5-0.

The Flyers pushed two across with a Jimmy Rohan loop two-run single to right off Mitch Arnold in the eighth. Jose Obispo went 1-2-3 in the ninth to wrap up save number two.

The victory was the first of the year over the Flyers and gave St. George (1-0, 16-35) an early advantage in the GBL North's second half standings. Orange County dropped to 22-21 in their first half with two games left remaining before opening play in the second stanza.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday night at 7:05pm MDT. St. George is expected to start LHP Jon Dutton opposite RHP Kevin Altman for the Flyers.

John Potter will have all of the live coverage on ESPN SportsRadio 1210 and Network1Sports.com beginning at 6:50pm.
