Victoria Seals End Half On A High Note

July 16, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Looking to wrap up the first half of the 2010 Golden Baseball League season with a victory, the Victoria Seals resumed their road trip with the first of a three-game series against the Chico Outlaws on Thursday night. Turning to Isaac Hess (1-0) for the start, the Seals matched up against Garret Holleran (5-1) on the mound for the North Division's first-half champions.

With Hess allowing just one base runner through the first three innings, Victoria would be first on the board in the top of the fourth frame. After lead-off batter Terrence McClain reached on a walk, Brian Rios picked up a single, and Matt Edgecombe drove in the 1-0 run with an RBI base hit. Moments later, Rios was thrown out at home plate by Chico left fielder J.J. Sherrill to preserve the tight game.

That would all change in the top of the sixth, however, as the Seals struck for six runs in the inning to stake a commanding advantage on the road. Lead-off batter Matt Kavanaugh started the inning with a solo home run in front of his family and friends to put Victoria ahead 2-0.

Two batters later, Isaac Hess began a string of three straight singles with the help of Wilver Perez and McClain, before Victoria stretched their lead to 4-0 on a pair of defensive miscues from the Outlaws. Brian Rios made it four straight hits for the Seals when his RBI single put the visitors up 5-0, before pinch-hitter Chris Van Rossum capped off a six-run sixth with a two-run blast for Victoria.

As the Seals turned to the bullpen following seven shutout innings from Hess, Chico finally found the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning when Anthony Manuel reached on a single, advanced on an error to Seals second basemen Dale Swinford, and later scored with the help of a base hit from Sherrill.

Seals reliever Chris Bodishbaugh bounced back, though, closing out the Outlaws with a double-play in the ninth inning to complete a dominant 7-1 victory by the Seals and polish off game number forty-five.

Isaac Hess improved his record to 2-0 since returning to the Seals with a brilliant three-hit performance over seven innings, while Garret Holleran took the loss for Chico. Two hits from five different Victoria batters spread out the Seals offense in the series opener, while J.J. Sherrill was the lone Outlaw to post two hits in a losing effort.
