Tucson Toros News Release

Maui, HI - The Tucson Toros lost in a 5-0 shutout by Maui Na Koa Ikaika on Thursday in the first game the Toros have ever played at Maehara Stadium. The loss put Toros a game back on the first half Southern Division winners in the race for the second half title.

The game began a pitcher's duel, with each teams starter holding the opposition scoreless until the bottom of the 7th inning when Maui C Phil Avlas broke the silence with a solo home run off of Toros starter Vince Davis. Two batters later, RF Tim Battle was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored off of an RBI single by SS Rex Rundgren to take a 2-0 lead. Maui capped off the night in the 8th inning with a 3 run bomb by LF Mark Okano, his 8th of the year.

The Toros 1B Cristobal Santana returned to the starting line up after being hit by a pitch in Yuma on July 3. His single was one of five hits for the Toros on the night. CF Ron Perodin went 2-for-3 with a walk, and a stolen base.

Davis received his fourth loss of the season despite a solid performance, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings, while striking out 4. Reliever Jesse Orosco Jr. was banged up after just one inning of work and allowed 4 hits, 3 earned runs and 1 strikeout.

The Tucson Toros will face the Na Koa Ikaika in Maui on Friday for game two of a six game series. First pitch is scheduled for 9:35 p.m. Tucson time.
