BINGHAMTON - Michael McLeod scored late and Colton White won the game in overtime as the Binghamton Devils defeated the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday night, 4-3.
Ryan Schmelzer got things going for the Devils with his first American Hockey League goal. Colby Sissons fired a shot from the right point that Schmelzer deflected by goaltender Carter Hart for the lead. Schmelzer's opening goal came 6:34 into the game with assists from Sissons and Marian Studenic.
The Devils added to their lead less than two minutes later. John Quenneville and Brandon Baddock helped set up Brandon Gignac for his first of the year at 8:10. Gignac beat Hart over the shoulder and the Devils took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Lehigh Valley came back to tie the game in the second period with two goals in 3:43. David Kase beat goaltender Eddie Lack with a deflection over the left shoulder at 5:04 and German Rubtsov cashed in while shorthanded with his fifth of the year to tie the game at two. After 40 minutes, the Devils led in shots 20-15 in a tied game, 2-2.
After Mikhail Vorobyev put the Phantoms up 3-2, Michael McLeod scored another late goal to eventually force overtime. Nathan Bastian fed McLeod flying to the net and he deflected the puck over the shoulder of Hart to tie the game with 3:18 left in the game.
In overtime, Colton White took a Marian Studenic pass, performed a spin-o-rama around Chris Conner, and fired a shot over the left shoulder of Hart for the win, 4-3. Lack recorded the win with 26 saves while Hart was credited with the loss, stopping 32.
The Devils hit the road Wednesday morning to take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 10:30 a.m. before returning home Friday and Saturday night.
