Dalpe's Hat Trick Fuels Monsters in 7-6 Win over Marlies at the Q

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Toronto Marlies in a shootout, 7-6, on Friday night in front of 8,445 fans at The Q. With the win, the Monsters improved to 7-3-1-0 overall this season and with a .682 points percentage, the team moves into a tie for first place in the AHL's North Division standings.

The Monsters got the scoring started quickly in the first period when Zac Dalpe potted home an even-strength goal at 1:25 on feeds from Paul Bittner and Dillon Simpson to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead. Toronto followed with two quick goals of their own as Dmytro Timashov scored at 5:29 on assists from Adam Brooks and Adam Cracknell, and then from Trevor Moore at 9:08 on set-ups from Brooks and Andreas Borgman to give the Marlies a brief 2-1 advantage. The Monsters evened things up at 13:57 of the opening frame when Eric Robinson, from Dalpe, scored on a wrap-around goal from behind the net to make the score 2-2. Cleveland regained the lead moments later at 15:29 when Brett Gallant tallied his first marker of the season thanks to a crisp pass behind the net from Sam Vigneault, giving the Monsters a 3-2 edge. Forward Kevin Stenlund extended the Cleveland lead at 17:40 of the first period, finding the back of the net off a feed from Alex Broadhurst, sending the Monsters into the break with a 4-2 lead.

In the middle frame, Dalpe picked up his second tally of the game, this time an even-strength marker from Robinson and Bittner at 1:15 to give the Monsters their largest lead of the game, 5-2. Toronto countered with three straight goals - the first an even-strength score by Josh Jooris at 8:16 of the period from Pierre Engvail and Timothy Liljegren, followed by a power-play tally from Sam Gagner at 11:37 on looks from Liljegren and Chris Mueller, and finally, an even-strength goal from Brooks at 14:29 courtesy of Mason Marchment and Moore to send both teams into the second intermission tied, 5-5.

The Monsters reclaimed the lead early in the final frame when Dalpe notched his third goal of the game, a power-play goal to complete his hat trick at 3:11 of the third period from Mark Letestu and Nathan Gerbe, giving Cleveland a 6-5 lead. The Marlies answered again at 16:21 when Rasmus Sandin scored on assists from Jeremy Bracco and Carl Grundstrom to even the score, 6-6. After a scoreless overtime it was Gerbe who scored in the third round of the shootout to secure a Monsters 7-6 home win.

Cleveland goaltender Brad Thiessen stopped 14 of 15 shots faced in relief of Matiss Kivlenieks to improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while Marlies backstop Eamon McAdam stopped 22 of the 23 pucks he faced in relief of Jeff Glass, dropping to 0-0-1 on the year.
