Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch earned their first win on home ice with a 5-4 victory over the Belleville Senators tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Alex Volkov paced the Crunch with two goals, while Boris Katchouk, Ben Thomas and Taylor Raddysh all tallied two assists on the night. The win snaps a three-game skid and moves the Crunch to 3-5-0-0 on the season.
Crunch goaltender Connor Ingram earned the win with 28 saves. Filip Gustavsson allowed five goals on 13 shots before being replaced by Jake Paterson in second period. Paterson went on to stop all three shots he faced. Syracuse went 3-for-7 on the power play with the penalty kill going 7-for-9.
The Crunch were first on the board with a power-play goal seven minutes into the game. After a good play by Nolan Valleau at the blue line to keep it on-side, Raddysh threw a cross-zone feed for Katchouk in the left circle. His return feed went down low for Dennis Yan to finish off backdoor. A minute later, the Senators evened the score when Joseph LaBate's shot from the right wing got through Ingram for Andrew Sturtz to poke across the goal line. Boston Leier tallied the secondary assist.
Syracuse regained the lead at the 15:56 mark when Alex Barre-Boulet sent a stretch pass through the neutral zone for Carter Verhaeghe. The forward skated in and roofed a wrister from the high slot. Thomas earned a helper on the go-ahead goal in his first game for the Crunch this season.
With 44 seconds remaining in the first, Belleville knotted the game for a second time. Adam Tambellini lit the lamp from the right circle on the man-advantage. Assists went to Jordan Murray and Stuart Percy.
The Crunch went back on top with another power-play goal just 48 seconds into the middle stanza. Katchouk won the faceoff in the right circle and kicked the puck out for Volkov to turn and score from the slot. Four minutes later, Andreoff blasted a rocket from the right faceoff dot while on the man-advantage that snuck short side and chased Gustavsson from the game.
At the 11:13 mark, Syracuse built up a three-goal lead. Volkov skated the puck around the back of the net and fired from the goal line. His shot was blocked, but he picked up his own rebound and potted his second of the night from the circle with the help of Thomas and Raddysh.
Belleville quickly came back within one with two goals only 14 seconds apart. With 3:22 remaining in the second period, Tambellini one-timed his second of the game from the right point off a feed from Paul Carey. Murray made it a multi-point night with the secondary assist on the power-play tally. Seconds later, Patrick Sieloff chipped the puck ahead for Rudolfs Balcers to speed into the zone down the right side and drop back a pass for Drake Batherson to finish off.
The Crunch and Senators return to the War Memorial Arena tomorrow at 7 p.m.
