PORTLAND, Maine. - Playing their fourth game in five days, the Lowell Devils could not overcome the Portland Pirates in a 3-0 loss on Monday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. In what was their last game of 2007, the Devils saw their season-best four-game winning streak come to an end.

With the score 1-0 in their favor at the start of the second, the Pirates made it a two-goal cushion at 2:58 as an interference call to Petteri Wirtanen was expiring. A turnover by the Devils' power play unit in the Portland zone turned into a 2-on-1 break with Matt Christie feeding Brandon Segal perfectly for the tap-in. The two combined again at 13:27 of the same period as Segal scored his second of the night off of a centering pass from the near corner by Christie.

Simon Ferguson gave Portland the early 1-0 lead on a power move down the left wing before sneaking a tuck shot through the five-hole of Jordan Parise at 4:20 of the first. Parise made 32 saves in the loss as the Devils were outshot 35-16. Pirates' goalie Mike McKenna stopped all 16 shots to register his first shutout of the season.

Lowell was a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. It was the second time in their last three games that the Devils have held their opponents scoreless on the power play.

Lowell returns home to start 2008 by battling the Falcons on Dollar Dawg Night on Wednesday, January 2 at 7:05p.m. All hot dogs are $1 for all fans in attendance.
