Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY - The Albany Devils came within an inch of their seventh win of the season; instead Portland Pirates winger Lucas Lessio converted a one-timer 2:58 into overtime to hand his team a 2-1 win Sunday at Times Union Center. Albany moved to 6-1-1-1, while Portland improved to 5-5-0-0.

Moments before the game winner, Mike Sislo was setup at the left faceoff dot while on the power play. His shot hit Portland netminder Mike McKenna's glove and dinged the left post.

"The puck comes from side-to-side and Whitney made a great pass to me," Sislo said. "I tried getting it off short side low. I think it hit the pipe then hit his pad and then sat there. It was an unfortunate bounce that it couldn't go in."

The Devils had their chances on the power play throughout the game. The team went 0-7 with the man advantage and outshot the Pirates, 32-23, overall.

"Our execution, puck movement and the decisions with the puck at times have to be better," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "The inability of the power play to get on the board tonight -- especially in the third. Even the one that runs into overtime, we got a minute there and we end up with only one shot and it ends up being a good opportunity."

McKenna finished with 31 saves, while Keith Kinkaid turned aside 21 and remained unbeaten during regulation.

Joe Whitney netted the Devils goal, which came at 1:28 of the game with assists from Paul Thompson and Scott Timmins. The goal was Whitney's third of the season.

"We had a lot of life at the beginning of the game," Whitney said. "A lot of guys were going. I got a good pass from Thompson and I got a quick shot off and it went in. So that was a good start to the game. We kind of just lost a little bit of life and had some mental lapses, and it cost us."

Portland tied the game, 1-1, thanks to an Alexandre Bolduc screen and a Dylan Reese point shot on the power play at 10:57 of the second period.
