IceCaps Earn Point in Shootout Loss to Bruins

November 2, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps were edged 3-2 in a shootout by the Providence Bruins Sunday afternoon at Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

Peter Budaj was sensational for St. John's, stopping 39 shots in regulation and overtime in a losing effort. Eric O'Dell had a goal and an assist while Will O'Neill also scored for the IceCaps in their best game of their current six-game road trip.

Ryan Spooner scored in regulation and added a shootout goal for the Bruins and Alexander Khoklachev notched the shootout winner.

The IceCaps got a much-needed opening goal on a 5-on-3 power play late in the first period. Chase Balisy threw a backhand pass out front to a wide-open O'Dell, who one-timed it past Malcolm Subban for a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins tied it up on a power play of their own at 5:36 of the second. Spooner took a pass near the top of the right circle and walked in before firing a wrist shot underneath the pads of Budaj to make it 1-1.

St. John's retook the lead with less than five minutes to play in the second on its second power play marker of the game. O'Neill's shot from the point appeared to hit a Bruins player in front and flew over the shoulder of Subban for a 2-1 IceCaps lead.

Budaj came up huge in the third with a stop on rookie sensation David Pastrnak, who was awarded a penalty shot after getting tripped on a clear-cut breakaway. However, Pastrnak got his revenge minutes later when he buried a loose puck in front of the net to tie things up at two apiece.

The teams traded chances for the rest of the third period and overtime, with both goalies standing tall. Budaj, in particular, made several key stops in the extra frame to keep the IceCaps alive and send the game to a shootout.

In the shootout, John Albert led things off with a strange goal that bounced off the post, off Subban's back and across the goal line. After a lengthy review, it was deemed a good goal, but that's all the IceCaps could muster. Subban shut the door the rest of the way while Spooner and Khoklachev beat Budaj to nail down the win for Providence.
