Pirates Victorious in First Overtime Appearance of Season

Albany, N.Y. - The Portland Pirates (5-5-0-0) were successful in their first overtime bid of the season, beating the Albany Devils (6-1-1-1) 2-1 at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. Sunday afternoon.

Albany started the game hot with a 1:28 goal in the first period from Joe Whitney, assisted by Ben Thompson and Scott Timmins. The period came to a grinding halt with 10:37 left on the clock due to a rutting issue behind the Pirates net. The teams headed back to the locker rooms and the Zambonis came out to resurface the ice in an early 1st intermission. The ice issue was fixed, play resumed, and the Pirates and Devils continued to play out the first period.

After a two-minute pause in action between the first and second frames, play resumed. The Pirated knotted up the game at 10:57 in the second, with a power play goal from Dylan Reese, his first of the season, assisted by Brendan Gormley and Henrik Samuelsson.

The third period came and went without incident. The Pirates were able to kill four penalties against Albany's fourth-ranked power play in the period and were a pefect 7-0 on the penalty kill throughout the game. Conversely, the Devils were 1 and 3 on the night for their penalty kill.

With the game tied at one, Albany and Portland headed to overtime, the first of the season for the Pirates. Portland converted with a goal from Lucas Lessio, assisted by Brendan Shinnimin at 2:58.

Pirates net minder Mike McKenna (2-4-0) saved 31 out of 32 total shots for his second win of the season. Keith Kinkaid (4-0-2) manned the goal for the Devils, saving 21 of 23 shots.

Portland hits the road next weekend, playing the Bruins in Providence at 7:05 p.m. on November 7. They return home to the Cross Insurance Arena for a game on November 8, Military Appreciation Night, against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at 7 p.m. They will host the Manchester Monarchs on November 11 at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
