Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, CO- The Colorado Eagles beat the Wichita Thunder 5-4 tonight in one of the most exciting games to this point in the 2005-06 season. Five different Eagles scored and Paulo Colaiacovo recorded his and the team's seventh win of the season. The Eagles are now 7-2-0 and are just two points behind the Thunder for the lead in the Northwest Division. Defenseman Matt Desrosiers scored the game-winning goal and added three helpers for the Eagles who face the Tulsa Oilers this Friday and Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center.

Wichita picked up an early lead when Ryan McLean jammed home a rebound at the 3:12 mark of the first period. Captain Jason Duda took a slap shot that was blocked by Colaiacovo who then blocked a rebound attempt by Tyler Liebel, but he couldn't get across the crease in time to block McLean's goal. Just after the goal, Ben Murphy took a penalty for holding, giving the Eagles a power play attempt. Eagles center Riley Nelson didn't take long to tie the game when he took a pass from Matt Desrosiers, skated in from along the boards and snapped a wrist shot between the leg pads of Sebastien Laplante; Ryan Tobler also assisted on the play. The Eagles weren't finished as Tobler would get his second assist of the game when he fed Brad Williamson on a centering pass, Williamson skated around one Wichita defender and beat Laplante stick side for his first goal of the season. The Eagles took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission and were out shooting the Thunder 19-10.

The second period had six total goals which tied an Eagles record for most combined goals in one period. The Eagles took a 3-1 lead on a power play goal by Ryan Tobler when he one-timed a pass from Sean Robertson for Tobler's third point of the game. Special teams play continued and Joe Blaznek cut the lead to one goal on a unassisted breakaway shorthanded goal. It was his twelfth goal of the season tying him for the league lead. The Thunder then tied the game at three on a blast from Daniel Tetrault, a power play goal at the 10:28 mark. The Eagles bounced back again on a goal from Les Borsheim, his first of the season when he picked up a rebound off a Fraser Filipic shot and gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Just over one minute later, with the Thunder shorthanded, Travis Clayton tied the game up when he streaked down the middle of the ice and beat Colaiacovo top shelf on Wichita's second breakaway shorthanded goal of the game. The Eagles had not given up a shorthanded goal in the first eight games of the season, but gave up two on Wednesday night. With the score tied at four, the Eagles once again battled back and it was Matt Desrosiers that took a pass from Riley Nelson and wristed a shot above Laplante's stick for the eventual game winning goal.

The Eagles took the 5-4 lead into the third period and beefed up their defense allowing only seven shots to the Thunder and killing both penalties. Colorado out shot Wichita 41-24 and have now out shot their opponent in seven of nine games.
