Des Moines Scores Seven in Win Over Lancers

The Des Moines Buccaneers open a three-game road weekend with an overwhelming 7-1 victory over Omaha.

Forward Braedon Ford (Miami // Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the way with 2 goals and an assist. Paul Minnehan (Cypress, Ca.) racked up 3 assists. Ethan Dahlmeir allows just one goal and makes 21 saves in the win.

The USHL named that trio the league's Stars of the Night (1st: Ford, 2nd: Minnehan, 3rd: Dahlmeir).

Des Moines got on the board just 6:56 into the game when forward Davis Borozinskis (Western Michigan// Liepaja, Latvia) fed the puck from down low to forward Lubomir Kupco (St. Cloud State//Kosice, Slovakia) who fired home the power play goal, his 5th goal of the season, to make it 1-0 Bucs. Defenseman Joe Gramer (Nebraska-Omaha//Moorhead, Minn.) flung a wrister home for his second goal of the season, also assisted by Borozinskis, giving Des Moines a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

In the 2nd period, the Bucs once again capitalized on power play opportunities. Just 2:13 into the period, Ford scored his first goal of the season on the rush off a pass from Minnehan. Less than four minutes later, Ilya Protas scored, redirecting the puck from Ben Kevan (Arizona State/Fairfiled, Ca.) and Minnehan, scoring for the second game in a row, this time on the power play.

Braden Rourke (Urbandale, Iowa) returned to action for the Bucs in Thursday's game but was greeted by a hit into the boards by Jamison Sluys who was whistled for boarding, drawing heat from both sides. Nate Delladonna (Penn State//Brewerton, NY) dropped the gloves with Ryan Kusler, and both players were charged with fighting majors and 10-minute misconducts, while Kusler was also assessed an Instigating penalty.

Omaha put its lone goal past Dahlmeir when David Deputy scored with less than two minutes to go in the 2nd. The Buccaneers answered right away on the power play, when Liam Watkins (Nebraska-Omaha//Okotoks, Alberta) won the draw back to Ford, who found Jack Kernan (Minnesota State//Maple Grove, Minn.) for his 7th goal of the season. It was 5-1 Des Moines after two.

Just :51 into the third, Ford scored his secord goal of the game, this one assisted by Owen West (Michigan State//Pittsboro, Ind.). Connor Bewick (Penn State/Gurnee, Ill.) tallied his first career USHL goal with 5:02 remaining, giving Minnehan his third assist of the game and 9th on the season, sealing the 7-1 win for the Buccaneers.

Des Moines went 3-for-6 on the power play and outshot the Lancers 33-22 overall.

The Buccaneers are now 6-6-3-0 with 15 points, in 5th place in the Western Conference. Des Moines travels to face Lincoln at the Ice Box on Friday at 7:05 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast live on FloHockey.tv.
