GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds put together a six-run second inning en route to a 10-2 victory over the Greenville Drive on Thursday night at Fluor Field in the series opener.
Delmarva broke the game open with a big six-run second inning, sending 10 batters to the plate. A pair of two-run singles drove in the first four, before a two-RBI double Cadyn Grenier capped off the six-run frame.
The Shorebirds added lone runs in the third and fourth innings. JC Encarnacion hit a solo home run in the third, before a wild pitch allowed Adam Hall to score in the fourth to push the lead to 8-0.
The Drive got on the board in the fourth. Triston Casas hit a solo home run to right, his 10th of the season and third straight game with a homer, to make it a 8-1 game.
Delmarva tacked on two more in the seventh. Encarnacion homered for the second time, this one a two-run shot, to push it to 10-1.
Greenville added one more run in the bottom half of the seventh. Kervin Suarez drew a two-out walk, moved to third on a single by Williams and scored on a throwing error by the left fielder to make it a 10-2 final.
Delmarva starter Drew Rome (4-0) recorded the victory, allowing one run on three hits in 5.0 innings pitched with six strikeouts against a lone walk. Drive starter Brayan Bello (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
Casas led the Drive offense with the homer as part of a 1-for-3 night with a walk. Alan Marrero, Suarez and Grant Williams contributed the remaining three Drive hits, all singles.
The series continues on Friday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Drive right-hander Alex Scherff takes on Delmarva left-hander Nick Vespi.
