Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 9-4 to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Delmarva scored seven runs in the first inning off West Virginia starter Ryan Hafner to build an insurmountable advantage.
Hafner hit Glynn Davis with the second pitch of the game before allowing a single and walking a batter to load the bases with no one out. Michael Ohlman walked and brought home the first run. The Shorebirds proceeded to plate two more before the first out was recorded. Hafner was knocked from the game after walking Sammie Starr to reload the bases with a 4-0 deficit. Zac Fuesser allowed a double to pinch hitter Mikey Planeta that cleared the bases for a 7-0 Shorebirds lead.
West Virginia scored once in the bottom of the first on back-to-back doubles by Jose Osuna and Gregory Polanco, but Delmarva made it a seven run lead again in the fifth with a two-run home run by Jason Esposito.
In the home half of the seventh, the Power added two runs on a single, a double, and a wild pitch. Francisco Diaz reached on a two-out single and Ashley Ponce doubled him home. The fourth ball tossed to Alen Hanson was a wild pitch that allowed Ponce to score from second to cut the Delmarva lead to six runs at 9-3.
Eric Avila capped the scoring in the ninth with a solo home run. The home run was his third of the season and extended his season-best hitting streak to eight games.
Hafner (0-8) took the loss and was charged with surrendering seven runs on two hits, four walks, and one hit batter. Mat Taylor (4-6) earned the win with a quality start. The Power bullpen pitched well, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out 14. The pitching staff combined to strike out 15 in the game; the most in a single game by West Virginia this season.
The Power will start a seven game road trip on Monday evening in Greensboro. West Virginia will play four games against the Grasshoppers before traveling for a three game set against the Lakewood BlueClaws. The Power return to Appalachian Power Park on Monday, July 30, to start an eight game homestand against Hagerstown and Lakewood.
SECOND HALF RECORD: 15-15
OVERALL RECORD: 38-62
