Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads and Lakewood BlueClaws split Sunday's doubleheader, with Lakewood claiming the first seven-inning game, 7-3, and the 'Dads taking game two, 2-1, before 1,475 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Crawdads, BlueClaws and Hagerstown Suns are all currently tied for the top spot in the Northern Division Second Half Standings.
Game One:
After the start of the game was delayed by 55 minutes due to inclement weather, the Crawdads (16-13, 52-46) got out to a quick start with a run in the bottom of the first against LHP Lino Martinez (W, 5-4). SS Luis Sardinas led off with a single to left-center field. After stealing second base, Sardinas scored later in the inning on an RBI single from DH Zach Cone to put Hickory ahead, 1-0.
The 'Dads added a second run in the bottom of the third inning. Sardinas started the stanza with a double down the left-field line, before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by 1B Trever Adams. 2B Rougned Odor placed an RBI base hit to left field, plating Sardinas for the 2-0 lead.
The BlueClaws (17-12, 43-55) cut the Crawdads lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning against LHP Will Lamb (L, 4-7). With 1B Chris Duffy at third base and two down, C Josh Ludy came through with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Lakewood then swung in front with six tallies in the top of the fifth inning. With two on and no outs, DH Aaron Altherr doubled in a run to tie the game. RF Kelly Dugan followed with a two-run single, before Duffy belted a two-run bomb. RHP Paul Schwendel took over on the mound and settled things down, but a final run in the inning did come in on a balk, making it 7-2.
The 'Dads came closer with an RBI single by Odor in the bottom of the fifth, but Lakewood hung on for the 7-3 win in the first half of the doubleheader.

Game Two:
The Crawdads (17-13, 53-46) again jumped in front with a run in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Gabriel Arias (L, 3-5). After reaching base on a fielder's choice, LF Chris Grayson scored on an RBI double by CF Zach Cone to straight-away center field, giving Hickory the 1-0 lead.
The 'Dads doubled the early lead in the bottom of the third frame. With one down, 3B Trever Adams singled his way on, before stealing second base and moving to third on a wild pitch. Grayson then drove an RBI double to left-center field, plating Adams for the 2-0 advantage.
After four scoreless innings by RHP Santo Perez (W, 3-8), the BlueClaws picked up an unearned run against him in the top of the fifth. 3B Maikel Franco was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and then took second on a wild pitch. LF Miguel Alvarez reached base on a fielding error by Adams, advancing Franco to third. Franco then scored as 1B Brock Stassi bounced into a double play, getting the BlueClaws on the board, 2-1.
Perez escaped the rest of the fifth with the lead intact, before RHP Jose Monegro (S, 2) dealt two perfect relief innings to close the 2-1 win for the Crawdads, splitting the doubleheader with Lakewood.
