Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 22, 2012) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators scored 11 runs in the third inning, but the Charleston RiverDogs rallied for a 14-13 win on Sunday evening at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Each team overcome a deficit of at least five runs, and 17 of 18 batters crossed the plate at least once.
With the game tied, 12-12, Charleston's Francisco Arcia doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth inning against Dustin Umberger (0-1), who suffered the loss. RiverDogs reliever Fred Lewis (5-2) worked 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four, for the win. Nick Goody spun a 1-2-3 ninth for the save (3).
Intimidators starter Myles Jaye walked the first three batters of the game, and Charleston's Casey Stevenson and Rob Refsnyder each added two-run singles for an early 4-0 lead.
Kannapolis exploded for 11 runs in the third inning, sending 16 batters to the plate for nine hits, three walks and an RBI-hit-by- pitch. With the RiverDogs leading 5-0, Martin Medina opened the hit parade with the first of five consecutive singles, including run- scoring hits by Adam Heisler and Grant Buckner. Two batters later, Leighton Pangilinan pulled the Intimidators within a run on a two-run single.
After Joe De Pinto loaded the bases with an infield single -- one of four in the inning -- Charleston starter Matt Bashore plunked Andrew Douglas to tie the game, and a passed ball cashed Pangilinan to put the Intimidators ahead, 6-5. Consecutive walks to the 10th and 11th batters of the inning plated another run, prompting Bashore's exit after 2 and 1/3 innings.
Dan Mahoney entered the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third and struck out Heisler but then surrendered a bases-clearing double to Grant Buckner. Kevan Smith added an RBI-single to cash Buckner, capping the rally and putting Kannapolis ahead 11-5.
Charleston chipped away with runs in the fourth and fifth before plating five runs in the seventh inning against the Intimidators bullpen to take a 12-11 lead. Stevenson scored the first run of the frame on a Jeff Soptic wild pitch, and Cody Grice added an RBI-single to pull the RiverDogs within two. Cito Culver's two-run triple off Dustin Umberger tied the game, and Culver scored on a wild pitch to give the RiverDogs the lead, 12-11.
The Intimidators tied the game on Buckner's seventh inning single for his career-high fifth RBI of the game.
Kannapolis has put up double-digit runs in an inning only one other time since 2005, a 12-run bottom of the sixth inning in a 14-5 win over West Virginia on June 6, 2009
The Intimidators hit the road for an 11-game road trip to Savannah, Delmarva and Hickory before returning to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on August 3 for a four-game series against the Rome Braves. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com .
