Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds held on for a 5-4 win over the Hagerstown Suns to snap a five-game losing streak. Hagerstown threatened in the ninth inning, but Delmarva (43-37, 5-6) eked out the win by stranding the tying run on third base.
Hunter Harvey made the start for Delmarva looking to get them back in the win column. The Shorebirds' ace made just two mistakes all day, but they resulted in three runs. Jimmy Yezzo hit a solo home run in the third inning, and Isaac Ballou lifted a deep fly ball that carried out for a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Delmarva took a lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Austin Wynns delivered an RBI single to tie it up at 1-1. Jared Breen then laid down a perfectly placed safety squeeze bunt to score Creede Simpson.
The Shorebirds edged their lead out to 4-1 with runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Jeff Kemp beat out an infield single that scored Gregory Lorenzo. Delmarva left the bases loaded, squandering an opportunity to break the game open. The Shorebirds tacked on another run with an RBI flare single by Lucas Herbst.
After Isaac Ballou's two home run, the game tightened to a one-run game. Delmarva manufactured a key insurance run with an RBI double by Drew Dosch in the ninth inning. Jon Keller pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief without allowing a base hit.
Austin Urban worked the ninth to close out the victory. After a single by Ward and double by Difo, Hagerstown had the tying run in scoring position. Urban got a grounder back to the mound for the second out, then let in one run on an infield single. The reliever buckled down and induced a game-ending pop fly to second base.
Harvey improved to 5-4 with the win, and Urban collected his second save of the season. Hector Silvestre dropped to 3-6 as he took the loss for the Suns.
Delmarva will go for a series split in Hagerstown on Monday evening. Right-hander Luc Rennie (2-6, 6.06) starts for Delmarva against the Suns' right-hander Andrew Cooper (5-1, 3.99). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Municipal Stadium.
